If you are in Northern CA and need to get out this weekend, there are a few trailheads open that are worth the effort to seek out. Here’s one:

Spring Hill- The source of the Sacramento River comes from an underground spring which originates here, thus the name “Spring Hill”. This is an moderate trail with 650-ft ascend trail to the top. Along the way are pine forests, rock outcroppings and scenic views of Mt. Shasta city. Round trip is 3.25 miles.

If you need to rest along the way that’s made easy by the local Eagle Scouts who have built many viewing benches along the trail.

Note: The trailhead has a lot of parking and is just off Ski Village Drive and across from the city park.

Spring Hill Trail

If driving South take the first Mount Shasta exit and a left at the bottom of the hill on Ski Village drive. Drive straight towards Spring Hill and you will see the trail head.

If driving North Take the Mount Shasta City Exit drive to Mt Shasta Blvd. Head straight to Ski Village Drive and take a right. Drive Straight ahead to the trail head just past the old concrete building remains.

Leaves left by fellow hikers that we found on the path

The locals who frequent this trail are friendly and sometimes leave “gifts” along the path. We ran across this and a heart shape cut out on a leaf on one of our hikes.

When you finish your hike make sure to quench your thirst across the street at the head waters of the Sacramento River.

Just head across the main road, over the RR tracks and right into the city park. Drive straight and you will see the headwaters of the Sacramento River in front of you. Bring a bottle to capture the cold, sweet water and save it for your next hike!

Check CA current regulations to confirm if the Park is open…may need to save that for later. It’s worth the wait.
