Sunday’s Detour was Island Hopping. Three islands in fact- Governors, Manhattan and Brooklyn. This was the first  detour that was a reader’s pick. This detour was chosen and guided by a NewYorker, friend and partner in crime Shelly! We doubled down and added in our mutual friend Stephanie’s pick, the Brooklyn bridge, as well. These islands are not surrounded by not an actual ocean but an ocean of people (of all sorts) and rivers. We took two ferries, a subway, a cab, a bridge, bikes and our feet. We covered every transportation option open to us in 6 hours. It was a feat and hard on the feet but “Oh so worth it”.

Should you visit New York I’d suggest Governors Island as it’s a quick ferry ride and provides sweeping views of NYC, Jersey City, Brooklyn, Ellis Island and our lady-the statue of Liberty. It’s a great first stop and a good way to orient yourself to the city. Also, on the way to the ferry you will pass through the financial district, the spot where our first president George Washington was sworn into office (that’s right it wasn’t DC, but should you have an extra $1000 laying around see Hamilton and discuss over dinner nearby in the theatre district) and the stock exchange. There is a potential bull sighting available as well.  I threw in the capitol as I arrived from DC on Saturday where I was exiled to Chantilly, Virginia and exactly why you didn’t hear about it. From Governors Island you can take the ferry to Brooklyn, walk and sweat a lot and cross the Brooklyn bridge by foot. There’s a lot of sight seeing on the bridge and it’s not all DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) or the skyline. Trust me, you will see a lot and feel the need to talk about it. Sunset is a glorious time to do this. Night views are great and much cooler in the summer.

Well, well an actual travel blog on my page. Who’d have thunk it. A picture tells a thousand words and I have a lot of words in the pictures below
