You know those things that just make you Happy? You want to know just a little more. Well, it’s come to my attention that it’s time to not only share my experiences but if you like them, tell you how you can do the same. At the End of each of my stories, I will add a Tail-wag (travel advice I like – would again go). I will add advice on how I found the detour, useful things I learned along the way and other useable tidbits that are intended to wag your tail or in Dog Terms “GIVE ME MORE!”
That being said I start this Post with a Dog Story. Followed by a Tail Wag. This is the FIRST. I will circle back to prior posts and add a Tail Wag. If you saw something you wanted to do or know you may find an additional wag on how to do this adventure or a piece of new knowledge I learned.
Should you be missing your dog or just like some affection let me tell you a little trick I learned, ok stumbled across, on an early am detour on the upper west side. The area of Riverside walk-off 83rd has an off-leash section behind the playground on the back section of the trail. The magical hour here is 7-9 am where each morning you can take your dog to run free. If you have no dog you can collect dog attention here. I stumbled upon a clever way to do this and I learned something. Dogs like eggs. I like dogs. Dogs hang out with you when you have eggs.
Early AM Detour: Here’s how it goes. I picked up a bike on Amsterdam at 79ththen walked two doors down to the bakery that sells…GLUTEN FREE BAGELS and omelets. I ordered a smelly, smelly egg and Lox omelet. I then jumped on my rented cruiser and headed down the hill. Upon finding the Riverside trail I started cruising along until I saw benches and dogs running free. I naturally went toward the dog park and sat far away from everyone to eat my food. I would highly suggest this now because I learned distance makes the dogs run further toward you and you get more time before they are taken away. I opened my breakfast very loudly and A PACK OF DOGS with NO LEASH were all over me. Begging, Licking, General Merriment. It was simply a moment of Happy. To be honest the owners were cool with it and let me feed them eggs. Who knew? Dogs Love Eggs. Post breakfast fun (once the food was gone the dogs were too) I returned the bike to the docking station at 78th because who wants to ride a 3 speed uphill? I walked back 78th instead of 79thas it’s less of a slope…it was a magical morning and I’ll be back. However, today it rains in NYC so this non-rain fearing Seattle girl will simply head into Central Park, possibly with an umbrella (see blog pic). WAIT it POURS here. A nice afternoon of writing or a museum perhaps?
How Do I do Detour “Project Tailway”- Riverside Park www.riversideparknyc.orgruns along the Hudson from 59thto 155th. The off least area is at 83rdand is the loop above the playground only. Make sure to utilize the city bikes. They are located around the city citibikenyc.com. The bikes are set up for 30 minutes of use. Please note: If you go overtime they charge you. You can buy 24 hours or 3 days and use them as much as you like as long as you return them every 30 minutes. This means you can ride to a destination and drop the bike. Maps are available for locations online. I used the one on Amsterdam and 79thand returned off the Riverside Trail at 78th. Please, no comment I did ride the trail after breakfast for a hot minute.
